National Seminar
on
ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN HIGHER
EDUCATION:
EXPLORING LEARNER-CENTRED
APPROACHES
29 and 30 January 2013
Organised by
Department of English
Christ University, Bangalore - 560 029
The University
Christ University, a premier educational institution, is an academic
fraternity of individuals dedicated to the motto of excellence and service. We
strive to reach out to the star of perfection through an earnest academic
pursuit for excellence and our efforts blossom into ‘service’ through our creative
and empathetic involvement in the society to transform it.
The Department
The Department of English covers, enriches and reinforces the rich
heritage offered by literature, facilitates ideas that provoke, prod and
nurture critical as well as creative thinking, develops inherent values and
builds an emotional and intellectual connectivity between the student and the
society. A dynamic environment coupled with a meaningful stress on all-round
educational effectiveness facilitates an attitude that lays emphasis on moral,
social and intellectual ethics.
The Context
English is the most preferred mode of classroom interaction in
institutions of Higher Education in India, and has retained its unique position
of importance for the past many decades. At the same time, there also seems to
be an academic disengagement on the part of students in today’s English
classrooms. This challenge needs to be faced and resolved at the level of
English pedagogies. The learner-centred approach could provide a means to circumvent
this challenge. It is a philosophy of teaching that focuses on experiences,
backgrounds, talents, interests, capacities, and needs of the students; and on
the best practices for the enhancement of motivation, learning and achievement
of all students (Mcombs 1997: Reilly, 2000)
The National Seminar organized by Christ University seeks to explore the
possibilities of the Learner-Centred Approach to identify newer pedagogical
methods and practices for the English classroom.
The Design
The National
Seminar intends to highlight learner-centred methodologies with regard to
curriculum design, testing and classroom transaction. It provides a platform to
enable students, teachers and experts in the field of English Language Teaching
(ELT) to present perceptions, to debate, discuss and chart new directions in
learner-centred approaches with regard to curriculum, testing and classroom
transaction through paper presentations, posters, documentaries, panel
discussions and workshops.
The Objectives
·
To explore the feasibility of
learner-centred approaches in various academic contexts

understand various practices existing in curriculum and in course designs
